I’m sure everyone has a bit of a Christmas wish list (even if we can’t highlight things in the Argos catalogue any more). Will writers are no exception. We all deserve a bit of magic at this time of year so here’s my letter to Santa, for me and all my fellow will writers…
Dear Santa
I know that you and the elves are very busy getting ready for Christmas. I hope you’re getting back to normal. Last Christmas was a bit strange so we’re all keeping our fingers crossed that this year will be different.
I’m writing because I have a request. You might think I’m being a bit cheeky, but it’s been a tough year for will writers. Lots of people have realised how important it is to make a will, which is great. The trouble is that talking to people over Zoom just isn’t the same as being face to face. I’ve been thinking about the things I love about my job and the things that can be a bit challenging. My Christmas wish this year is for more wonderful clients. I’d be really grateful if you could find room in your sack for more clients like this…
Clients who make an appointment and stick to it
I don’t like to whinge, but I’ve had so many last-minute cancellations this year it’s stopped being funny. I know people have busy lives, but cancelling the day before (or later) doesn’t give me enough time to book someone else in. I promise that I’ll start highlighting my cancellations policy more if you can send me more people who stick to their appointments!
People who need wills and LPAs
I love it when I talk to a new client and they want to get everything sorted in one go. Everyone I talk to knows they need a will, but Lasting Powers of Attorney often get put on the back burner. It makes me so happy when I get both done and dusted at once, because I know the client’s got everything in order. There’s also the fact that I get to talk about all the juicy details, which makes it really fun.
People with brilliant life stories
People think that writing wills and LPAs must be really dry, but when a client has a brilliant life story you can have fun and get to know them as a person. It also helps me do a good job for them. I work on my own most of the time so a client I can have a bit of banter with is like being back in an office. I’d love it if you could send me some more.
Clients who’ve sorted their documents out.
I know this is incredibly basic but seeing a client who has a well organised bundle of papers is just a joy. When I arrive to be greeted by a pile of papers and the words ‘I’m not really sure what’s in here’, my heart sinks. I’ve even been invited to go through drawers and cupboards by clients who ‘don’t know where everything is.’ Being organised saves so much time, so could you sprinkle some fairy dust and make it happen?
Thanks for everything Santa.
Happy Christmas,
Love Rosie
